Blue Mountains

The picture posted above was taken at the Echo Point lookout and is a view of the iconic Three Sisters, before we headed down the Giant Stairway.

My sister and I recently went on a weekend retreat to the Blue Mountains. The vast region, known for its sandstone rock formations, caves and gorges, gets its name from the blue haze blanketing the series of canyons. The blue mist rises from the millions of eucalyptus trees and tints the sky. Blue Mountains is only a 2 hour train journey west from Sydney, so I headed straight to the station Friday evening after a full day of classes at uni. We based our stay in the Art Deco town of Katoomba to access the Blue Mountains National Park (There are 6 other National Parks in the area!). The pastel coloured buildings and stained glass add a touch of glamour to the picturesque town. Its main street is lined with antique dealers, vintage shops, second-hand booksellers, cafés, restaurants, and a hattery (!). After an early wake up on Saturday morning for some trekking to take in the beautiful natural scenery, we wandered around town and found some sweet spots to share with you.

Even though Chocolate & Co is about baking, I have to mention Station Bar‘s woodfired pizza, sooo delicious… well when you think about it, dough falls within the boundaries of a baking blog, so I’m not really off topic 🙂

Since it was a short stay, I did not get a chance to try the many gelaterias and pastry shops of Katoomba, but I have this recommendation for your weekend getaway:

1. The Paragon, Australia’s Oldest Café

Touted as Australia’s oldest café, The Paragon is an opulent landmark situated in the heart of Katoomba. Established in 1916, the iconic café has three rooms: Café, Formal Dining Room and Cocktail Lounge. They are some of the finest and most richly detailed Art Deco interiors. They serve lunch, morning and afternoon tea, and supper on Saturdays with a live band in the cocktail lounge. The Paragon is best known for its range of hand made chocolates. The brand is one of the oldest in Australia and its packaging has not changed in 80 years. My sister and I bought a small box of chocolates at the front counter, but I’ve heard it’s a nice place to dine at as well.
