My housemate Marie and I travelled from Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs to the North Shore where we met her friend Anna for a night out at Firefly. I’ve been out for brunch in the city and to bakeries, but an evening out for dinner is usually reserved for a special occasion like a birthday or a goodbye party. We didn’t actually have any particular occasion to celebrate other than the fact that Firefly was hosting a week-long Festival of Guilty Food Pleasures. The new decadent additions to the menu were customers’ suggestions. The special menu showcased outrageously indulgent dishes (tellement cochon, tellement délicieux!). Before dessert, Anna, Marie and I ordered three plates to share tapas-style: the pumpkin ricotta gnocchi with sage, burnt butter, and walnuts, the lamb pork & garlic meatballs, and the bacon and cheddar fries with truffle oil, parmesan cheese and aioli (this last one was part of the Guilty Pleasure menu). The dishes were succulent and satisfied our appetite (we especially liked the aioli and I loved the gnocchi). From the presentation of the dishes to the design of the restaurant down to the waiters’ aprons, the look was an impeccable mix of rustic sophistication. I’d gladly eat tuna and crackers all week if it means I get to eat this well on a night out. The quality and quantity of food presented to us was astounding since the price was quite affordable for a night out in this city.
Now about those desserts. Damn.
We each ordered a dessert and shared. The waffle stack was part of the Guilty Food Pleasures menu, and was it ever extravagant. The crunchy waffles were doused in maple syrup and topped with crispy bacon and caramelised bananas. Moreover, scoops of salted caramel ice cream (with little caramel chunks) made this a hot ‘n cold dessert with lots of texture. The brownie had an intense chocolate flavour. The decadent desser melted in your mouth. And the cheesecake! Oh cheesecake, so sumptuous and creamy. When my friend took a bite, this expression came over her. Pure happiness haha.
